Syrian rebels advance toward Damascus amid rising tensions

Assad’s absence fuels speculation about the regime’s collapse

Syrian rebel forces have made significant strides toward Damascus, asserting they are now "at the gates" of the capital following a swift and widespread offensive. Despite these advances, the Syrian army denies reports of retreat, maintaining that it remains in control of key positions.

Amid the chaos, President Bashar al-Assad’s whereabouts remain uncertain. While Syrian and Iranian officials insist he is still in Damascus, other sources suggest he may have left the capital. U.S. officials have indicated that the regime could collapse within days, further fueling speculation about the government’s stability. Residents in Damascus describe a city gripped by fear and panic as tensions escalate.

In the south, a new uprising has erupted in the Daraa province, where rebel forces claim to have seized a major military base, intensifying their push toward the capital. Meanwhile, in western Syria, opposition forces are advancing toward the city of Homs, prompting an exodus of residents bracing for potential clashes between government troops and rebel fighters.

The rapid developments highlight the increasing pressure on the Assad regime, with the conflict’s outcome hanging in the balance as opposition forces close in on strategic targets.
