The case of the meddling mother-in-law

52-year-old Cypriot woman schemed to force her daughter to divorce her son-in-law

Newsroom

An extraordinary case came before the Larnaca Criminal Court, involving a mother-in-law who set up her 19-year-old son-in-law in an attempt to force him to separate from her daughter. The court found her guilty, along with two accomplices.

The 52-year-old orchestrated an elaborate scheme to ruin her son-in-law’s life. She enlisted the help of a friend, who happened to be the sister of one of the convicted co-conspirators, to aid her in "getting rid" of the young man.

The plot centered around planting drugs in the 19-year-old’s car, intending for the police to discover them. This would lead to his arrest and imprisonment, thereby compelling her daughter to end the marriage.

However, the mother-in-law’s plan was exposed and ultimately backfired. The Criminal Court sentenced her to nine months in prison.

The two accomplices were also convicted. The first received a two-year prison sentence, while the third was sentenced to 12 months behind bars.
