Trump pushes for federal workforce cuts—A move Cyprus could learn from

Trump's workforce cuts spark debate—Could Cyprus benefit from a similar approach?

Newsroom

President Donald Trump is making big changes in the U.S. government, offering federal employees a deal to leave their jobs if they don’t want to return to the office. The plan could significantly shrink the government workforce—and it’s something Cyprus might want to consider, given concerns about its own growing number of public employees.

The U.S. government has told workers they can take up to eight months of pay and benefits if they resign by February 6. This comes after Trump ordered all federal employees to return to in-person work, ending the remote work policies that began during COVID-19. The administration is calling this plan “Fork in the Road.”

America has about two million federal employees, and many say the government is simply too big. In Cyprus, the number of public sector workers has also been growing, even as many people call for the government to cut costs. Some Cypriots feel that not all civil servants pull their weight, adding to frustration about government spending.

Not everyone agrees with Trump’s approach. Critics, including U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, warn that employees who take the buyout might not get paid as promised. Federal employee unions also argue that reducing staff could make it harder to deliver essential services.
