U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie D. Fisher, engaged in a joint exploration of the Walled City of Famagusta alongside Dr. Simos Ioannou and Dr. Süleyman Uluçay. The visit on March 5, 2024, aimed at deepening cultural ties and understanding the historical significance of Famagusta to the island.
During the tour, Ambassador Fisher and the Cypriot leaders delved into the rich cultural tapestry of Famagusta, exploring its historically important sites and engaging in discussions about the city's profound cultural heritage.
Highlighting the enduring support from the United States, Ambassador Fisher commended the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for its substantial contributions to the restoration and preservation of iconic landmarks such as the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral, Desdemona Park, and the Sea Gate. These efforts also extended to capacity building for civil society networks in Famagusta, fostering a deeper connection between communities.
Expressing gratitude for the commitment of Dr. Ioannou and Dr. Uluçay, Ambassador Fisher commended their joint efforts in bringing together the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The shared endeavor contributes significantly to promoting understanding and collaboration.
