María Angela Olgin, the United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy for the Cyprus issue, expressed a positive outlook following her meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides on Saturday at the Presidential Palace.
Highlighting the upcoming discussions between the leaders of the two Cypriot communities, Olgin described the scheduled meeting next week as “a promising development” after years of limited dialogue. She also noted that her recent interaction with young people in Amman had reinforced her belief in the potential for constructive progress.
“I’m encouraged by the productive conversation I had with President Christodoulides,” Olgin said, adding that she hopes the upcoming meeting will be meaningful and yield tangible results. She emphasized that community support will be essential if the leaders are to successfully move the peace process forward.
Preparations are already underway for the Thursday meeting, and Olgin expressed cautious optimism regarding the outcome of the session planned for 11 December. She pointed out that leaders in Cyprus have not convened for several years, making this engagement a noteworthy step toward renewed dialogue.
President Christodoulides welcomed Olgin’s return to the island and reiterated his commitment to substantive negotiations. “We are ready to begin serious discussions and rely on the support of the UN and the political will of all parties involved,” he said, emphasizing the importance of planning the next steps carefully.
