Summer rains drenched the mountains of Cyprus on Wednesday, providing an unusual mid-season spectacle as clouds unleashed heavy showers across the island’s highlands.
Starting around noon on August 27, rainfall was reported in various mountainous regions, catching residents and visitors off guard. Videos shared on the website Kairophiloi Cyprus show dark clouds spilling water over forested slopes, turning dry summer landscapes temporarily lush and green.
While Cyprus is no stranger to rain, August is typically one of the driest months, making these showers a rare mid-summer event. Local authorities said there were no reports of flooding or damage, though drivers were advised to exercise caution on slick mountain roads.
Meteorologists suggest the sudden rainfall could provide a brief respite from the high temperatures that have dominated the island this month, while also giving a boost to local vegetation stressed by the summer heat.
As the skies cleared later in the day, the fleeting rains left behind a misty, refreshed landscape, a reminder that even in the height of summer, Cyprus’ mountains can surprise with their own weather drama.
