Some nine million masks will be arriving on the island within the coming weeks, the Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

The masks, to be distributed among the general public in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus, will be arriving in two batches at the end of April and mid-May.

More details will be announced by the Health Ministry in the coming days.

The procurement of €3 million worth of protective masks was announced by Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou in a press conference earlier this month

Cypriot officials have yet to call for mandatory use of face masks.

According to the World Health Organization, healthy people do not need to wear face masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and masks should only be for those who are sick, their caretakers, and health care workers.
