The Criminal Court Judge, Nicole Gregoriou, granted a final adjournment for the hearing in which Thanasis Korfiotis, defense attorney for former Commissioner of Volunteerism Yiannakis Yiannaki, is expected to present his position. The decision came after both Korfiotis and the Prosecution assured the court that significant progress had been made in efforts to streamline the trial proceedings.
Yiannakis Yiannaki faces a total of eight charges related to forgery and the circulation of forged documents. Despite several months having passed, the trial has not advanced substantially. When Korfiotis took over the defense, he had already requested a postponement during the previous hearing on January 30 to allow time for an agreement aimed at expediting the proceedings.
During today's hearing, both Korfiotis and the Prosecution requested a postponement until next Tuesday, February 18, when the case will be revisited in court. Both parties assured Judge Grigoriou that they were very close to reaching a resolution. Korfiotis acknowledged that there had been challenges but stated that the process was now on the right track to significantly reduce trial time.
He further noted that if the ongoing efforts fail, his continued involvement in the case may be uncertain. He explained that in such a scenario, differing approaches between himself and his client could arise. While emphasizing that there was no disagreement between him and Yiannaki, he clarified that if such differences emerged, he would not want to risk his professional relationship with his client.
Judge Grigoriou stressed that repeated adjournments result in unnecessary delays and emphasized that the proceedings must move forward next Tuesday without fail. She asked Korfiotis what he expected to change by then. Korfiotis responded that final answers from all parties were still pending but refrained from providing further details.
The next hearing has been scheduled for February 18 at 10:00 AM.
