Three ancient coins were recently submitted to the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus.
According to a statement from the Deputy Ministry of Culture, on September 9, the vice president of the organization Sophia for Children, Nopi Nicolaou Telemachou, handed the coins over to officials of the Department of Antiquities. The coins were discovered inside the organization’s donation box at Larnaca Airport.
The coins include a silver tetradrachm from the 2nd century B.C., a bronze follis from the 4th century A.D., and a copper forty-nummi coin from the 6th–7th century A.D. They have been added to the permanent collection of the Cyprus Museum, and the process of cataloging, digitizing, and conserving them has already begun.
The Department of Antiquities, the authority responsible for protecting and managing Cyprus’ archaeological heritage, expressed its gratitude to Sophia for Children for turning over the antiquities.
The statement also reminded the public that trafficking in antiquities is a criminal offense and that the export of antiquities and other cultural goods is regulated by the Department of Antiquities.
It concluded by emphasizing that public involvement and cooperation are vital for the protection, preservation, and promotion of Cyprus’ archaeological heritage.
