According to local media, the 5-month-old infant of a Somali couple was taken to Makarios Children’s Hospital in Nicosia on Wednesday with visible abrasions on her body.

An initial physical exam was conducted by a pediatric surgeon, followed by the resident gynecologist at the hospital, who then called state pathologist Eleni Antoniou to confirm whether the baby’s hymen had been ruptured.

Antoniou confirmed that the baby girl’s hymen had been broken.

According to local reports, the mother of the child accused her husband who was then arrested. But police did not confirm the nature of the allegations or the identity of the accused.

The dad has denied raping his baby daughter, saying that he and his wife together had taken their baby to the hospital.

During a closed hearing at the Nicosia courthouse, a district judge ordered the father in remanded custody for five days.
