Residents in a Lakatamia neighbourhood were ordered to evacuate the area after a gas cylinder was spotted outside a local bank.

According to Kathimerini Cyprus, authorities were notified Friday morning regarding a suspicious item on Strovolos Avenue in Lakatamia, a suburb in west Nicosia.

Local media said the suspicious object, described as a cylinder of liquid gas, was spotted near a local bank’s ATM, while some reports said the cylinder appeared to have been attached to the automated teller machine.

Members of the bomb squad have been at the scene, with fire fighters standing by and police officers securing the perimeter. Authorities have told residents and workers in the immediate vicinity to evacuate out of an abundance of caution.
