Newsroom

A British elderly woman died in a hotel fire in the north on Friday, while her husband was taken to the Emergency Room.

According to Turkish Cypriot media, a fire broke out in a hotel room in Lapithos/lapta, a town on the northern coastline, with officials confirming that a 71-year-old British woman died.

Her husband was rushed to the Emergency Room but no update on his condition was immediately available.

The incident took place in the morning at LA Hotel & Resort, where several other people also received on-site medical treatment for smoke inhalation.

Officials did not point to any causes while unconfirmed reports in the media spoke of the elderly couple having an argument before the fire broke out.

Hotel guests were evacuated while administration officials went on site to inspect the situation, saying more information would be made public later on.
