A British senior citizen died on Saturday in an apparent drowning incident in Paphos, just one day before he and his wife were due to leave the island.

The 71-year-old British tourist was swimming near his hotel at a beach close to Ayios Nikolaos chapel in Kato Paphos, when his wife nearby realised something was wrong. Around 3:30pm, according to media reports, she saw her husband beginning to lose consciousness and immediately called for help, with lifeguards on jet skis rushing to his aid.

An ambulance then transported the man to the Emergency Room at Paphos General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced him dead on arrival. An autopsy, scheduled within the next few days, is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The couple was vacationing on the island and were due to travel back home on Sunday. Officials were said to have ruled out foul play.
