Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in Cyprus, with an average of around 4,000 new cases and 1,560 deaths each year over the past five years, according to the latest data shared by the Oncology Nursing Section of the Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association. The association released a statement in honor of World Cancer Day, focusing on raising awareness and support for those affected by the disease.

This year’s World Cancer Day theme, “United by Uniqueness,” is part of a three-year campaign (2025-2027) that highlights the personal journeys of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. The message is clear: cancer is not just a medical issue—it’s deeply personal, impacting individuals and their families in profound ways.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men in Cyprus. Between 2016 and 2020, around 540 new cases were recorded annually, but the numbers spiked in 2019 and 2020, with 550 and 656 new cases respectively. Breast cancer, on the other hand, affects around 700 women annually and seven men.

These numbers serve as a stark reminder of the need for continued awareness, early detection, and prevention. But the call for action doesn’t stop there. The association also stressed the importance of improving patient care and providing better support services.

A key part of cancer care in Cyprus is the role of oncology nurses. These professionals are essential in every stage of a patient’s journey, from education and counseling to symptom management, emotional support, and coordinating care with other medical teams. Oncology nurses also play a crucial part in enhancing early diagnosis and prevention efforts.

The message from the Oncology Nursing Section is clear: while cancer is a daunting challenge, it is one that requires a compassionate, personalized approach to care—both for patients and their loved ones.

This World Cancer Day, the goal is to foster empathy and a deeper understanding of what it means to fight cancer, with a renewed focus on the people behind the statistics.
