Decision follows Menendez's conviction on multiple corruption charges

The Paphos City Council has revoked the decision to award U.S. Senator Robert Menendez the title of Honorary Citizen of Paphos and the Golden Key of the City.

In an announcement by the Paphos Municipality, it was revealed that during yesterday's meeting, chaired by Mayor Phaidon Faidonos, the City Council unanimously decided to rescind the previous City Council’s decision from December 22, 2022. This decision had initially granted the honorary title and key to the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the U.S. Senate, Robert Menendez.

The revocation comes in the wake of a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling on July 16, which found Menendez guilty of all 16 charges he faced in his corruption trial.

The City Council stated that their decision was heavily influenced by the gravity of the corruption offenses Menendez was found guilty of, which he committed while serving as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

The Paphos City Council believes that this revocation contributes to fostering a culture against corruption, reinforcing the integrity of societal and governmental institutions.
