Cyprus anticipating a mild and varied summer weather pattern

The Director of the Meteorological Service forecasts a departure from scorching heat as Cyprus prepares for a relatively mild summer

Ioanna Kyriakou

The upcoming summer seems poised to deviate from the patterns observed in previous years, with Director of the Meteorological Service, Kleanthis Nicolaides, indicating prolonged periods of scorching heat may not be as prominent. In an interview with K, Mr. Nicolaides explained that this summer season is expected to be relatively mild, with intermittent rain showers. He attributed this change to the prevailing climatic conditions impacting the wider region of Cyprus, which are contributing to a more temperate summer climate.

Consequently, Mr. Nicolaides shared that the anticipated temperatures for the immediate future are not likely to reach the scorching 40-degree Celsius range until the weekend. However, he mentioned the possibility of temperatures reaching 37 to 38 degrees Celsius by Monday. Additionally, he highlighted that the upcoming days are unlikely to see any rainfall, with the notable feature being temperatures within the normal range or slightly above average for this time of the year.

The forecast in detail

Current Conditions:
A weak seasonal low-pressure system is starting to influence the area. This will bring a mix of weather conditions throughout the day.

Today's Outlook:
During the afternoon, expect generally clear skies with a chance of locally increasing clouds, particularly in the mountains. Isolated rain showers may occur in these areas. Winds will predominantly be light to moderate, ranging from southwesterly to northwesterly at around 3 to 4 Beaufort. On the coast, winds may reach a moderate level at 4 Beaufort. The sea conditions will be relatively calm with a slight possibility of becoming slightly rough.

Initially, there may be locally moderate winds at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea conditions will remain calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to approximately 21 degrees Celsius inland and on the coast, while the higher mountains will experience temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow's Outlook:
Expect mainly clear skies throughout the day, although cloud cover is anticipated to increase in the mountains during the afternoon. Winds will start off predominantly from the northwest to northeast, ranging from light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. As the day progresses, the winds will gradually shift to come from the sea at a light to moderate intensity of 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea conditions will be slightly choppy. Temperature-wise, inland areas will reach around 35 degrees Celsius, while the southern, eastern, and western coasts will experience temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius. The northern coasts will have temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius, and the higher mountains will see temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius.
