Cyprus Civil Defence shelters ready for 30% of population

2,200 shelters available for emergencies in Cyprus

Newsroom

Cyprus' Civil Defence has 2,200 shelters currently available, capable of accommodating 30% of the island's population in case of an emergency, according to spokesperson Panayiotis Liassides. Efforts are underway to increase the number of shelters, especially in urban areas.

Liassides noted that discussions are ongoing with the Church to identify large underground spaces in churches, as well as new developments with underground areas that could serve as protection spaces. The shelters are equipped with basic amenities such as water tanks and toilets, though some still need to be fitted with dry-type, biological toilets.

The shelters are designed for short-term use, intended to protect civilians during bombings or airstrikes. Liassides emphasized that the aim is to eventually provide shelter for 70% of the population, though many would be mobilized for military or vital services during a crisis.

Citizens can contact the Civil Defence at any time via the phone numbers 22403450 and 22403452 to locate the nearest shelter by providing their address and postal code. Notifications to seek shelter will be made through the siren system, which is also used during annual commemorations of the coup and invasion. Citizens are advised to bring water and dry food for short stays in the shelters, though provisions are in place for longer stays if needed.

Liassides reassured the public that Civil Defence is on high alert due to ongoing instability in the Middle East and urged citizens to remain calm in the event of an emergency, as panic could worsen the situation.
