President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed European Council President António Costa to Nicosia, showcasing Cyprus’ readiness to take the helm of the European Union Council in the first half of 2026.

Christodoulides said the island nation is prepared to tackle both longstanding EU priorities and emerging challenges, including economic competitiveness, security, defense, and migration. Traditional areas such as the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, cohesion policy, and Common Agricultural Policy will also remain on the agenda.

“As a member state in this region, it is crucial for us to engage with neighboring countries and bring them closer to the European Union,” Christodoulides said during remarks at the Presidential Palace. “We share the same challenges, and collaboration is essential.”

He praised Costa’s initiative to visit all EU capitals ahead of the October European Council summit. “This approach reflects a commitment to every member state, regardless of size, and we look forward to welcoming you again during our Presidency,” the Cypriot leader added.

Costa, in turn, stressed the importance of unity and dialogue among member states. “It is vital to consider different perspectives and priorities, building cohesion as we prepare for the EU’s future agenda,” he said.

Highlighting Cyprus’ upcoming role, Costa noted the Presidency will take place at a pivotal moment. “We rely on you to advance key priorities in competitiveness, security, and regional engagement,” he said. He also pointed to the Mediterranean and Middle East as regions of strategic importance, emphasizing that the EU must promote stability, peace, and prosperity.

The two leaders held bilateral discussions focusing on the European Council’s agenda and the responsibilities Cyprus will assume during its Presidency.
