The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works has tabled a bill aimed at tackling the issue of passenger transport by unlicensed taxi drivers, proposing fines of €700 for first-time offenders and €1500 thereafter.
The draft legislation, which was discussed today in the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, addresses a longstanding problem that has escalated significantly in recent years, according to AKEL MP Valentinos Fakontis.
"It has been our conviction that legislation must be established to prevent illegal taxi operations," Fakontis stated after the session, expressing satisfaction that the bill has finally reached the parliament after a prolonged period.
According to the AKEL lawmaker, the purpose of the bill is to combat piracy, protect the taxi driver profession, and ensure the safety and security of passengers. He also noted that the proposed legislation includes provisions for the process and amount of administrative fines for violators.
During the preliminary discussion, it became apparent that directly involved parties fully support the proposed bill, as their concern lies in safeguarding both the profession and the quality of service provided to the passenger community, Fakontis reported.
AKEL advocates for the protection of each profession against unfair competition and the public against poor service offerings, he added.
Emphasizing the need for an effective and practical law, Fakontis highlighted the importance of legislation that can be easily implemented within the framework of control and transparency and serves as a deterrent to those who engage in illegal activities.
Responding to inquiries about the fine amounts, he explained that the proposed penalty stands at €700 for first-time offenders and increases to €1500 thereafter.
The bill is expected to undergo further review and discussion in the coming weeks as lawmakers work toward implementing measures to regulate the taxi industry and protect both drivers and passengers from unlawful practices.
The proposed legislation signifies a significant step forward in addressing longstanding concerns surrounding unauthorized taxi services and underscores the government's commitment to upholding standards within the transportation sector.
