The early closure of schools for the Christmas and New Year holidays was a political scenario in the event that there was no reduction in the spread of the virus in schools.
With the current epidemiological data as well as the detection of the spread of the virus, there does not seem to be a need to activate this particular emergency response, which has been on the table for the last three weeks. Sources in the Ministry of Education with whom Kathimerini has spoken to believe that according to the situation in schools as it is today, closing them early for the holidays in order to curb the spread of the virus is unwarranted.
The same sources, however, could not say with the same certainty that early school closures would not be imposed in case the situation deteriorates in the next few days up until December 23, which is when schools actually close for the holidays. All in all, the government is ready to enact this measure depending on the situation in the coming days.
