An elderly woman in Paphos died Monday evening following a road accident earlier downtown involving three vehicles.

According to police, an 81-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat with her 86-year-old husband at the steering wheel, around noon in downtown Paphos. At one point, the vehicle was on Mesogis street and entered Gregori Afxendiou street, causing a collision with an oncoming car that was driven by a 45-year-old male.

Reports say the elderly driver blocked the way of an oncoming vehicle, while the circumstances of the accident are still under investigation

Some media reports suggested the elderly driver blocked the way of the oncoming vehicle, while police said the circumstances of the accident were still under investigation.

Both cars ended up striking a third vehicle that was parked on the side of the road, injuring the driver described as a 41-year-old female from China.

As a result of the crash, the 81-year-old woman suffered a broken hip and a broken rib. She was rushed to the Emergency Room at Paphos General Hospital, where she was admitted for surgery. She was then admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she later succumbed to her injuries around 10:30pm.

The three other individuals were also taken to the Emergency Room, with the elderly driver and the woman being treated for minor injuries and then released. The 45-year-old driver remained in hospital as a precaution.
