Last week, the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) Police Marine Unit carried out a daring rescue operation in the waters of Ormidhia, saving a father and his two sons after their boat broke free from its anchor and drifted away.
According to a press release issued by the SBA on Tuesday, the Marine Unit officers responded swiftly to the emergency. They first rescued a disoriented 13-year-old boy, who had attempted to swim after the drifting boat. The officers then successfully retrieved the boy's father, who was found in a state of exhaustion after his failed attempt to retrieve the vessel.
Shortly afterward, the press release stated that the Marine Unit rescued the second boy, aged 16, who was in good health, along with their four-meter rigid inflatable boat.
Sgt Kikis Sofocleous, the officer in charge of the rescue operation, emphasized the importance of their timely intervention, stating that the individuals rescued were fortunate. He highlighted that without the Marine Unit's prompt response, the outcome could have been much different.
Saving lives remains one of the primary objectives of the Marine Unit, Sgt Sofocleous reiterated. He urged the public to take all necessary precautions for their safety and the safety of others when engaging in sea-related activities. Additionally, he advised consulting weather forecasts before venturing out to sea.
