Hundreds gather in Nicosia for the 2nd Green Agenda Summit to push forward environmental and energy reform.

Newsroom

As part of Cyprus’ ongoing effort toward a successful Green Transition, and with the broader goal of becoming a model for eco-friendly living and sustainable development, the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit was held for the second consecutive year, drawing strong participation and praise.

Organized by Agenda Cyprus and Kathimerini newspaper, the summit took place on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the Hilton Hotel in Nicosia, attracting over 400 attendees. The conference placed pressing environmental, energy, and sustainability issues at the center of public dialogue.

The summit served as a vibrant platform for the exchange of ideas, best practices, and cross-sector collaboration, bringing together representatives from government bodies, private enterprises, academic institutions, and social organizations. Its core aim was to strengthen Cyprus’ national push for a green transition and position the country as a benchmark for environmental responsibility and sustainable progress. Ultimately, the summit advocated for a greener, more climate-resilient future, benefiting both current and future generations.

International and local voices united for change

The event was enriched by the presence of notable figures from both the local and international arenas, reinforcing the summit's multi-layered impact. Leaders of the Cypriot business community, representatives of key institutions, and renowned speakers shared insights through keynote addresses and panel discussions, each highlighting the urgent need for action on sustainability.

A standout moment was the keynote speech by Ramez Naam, a globally recognized expert on green energy and innovation. Naam described Cyprus as a “goldmine” of solar energy, stressing that with the highest electricity prices in Europe, the country has a real opportunity to slash household energy costs by harnessing the sun. He emphasized that solar power becomes cheaper the more it's developed, unlike fossil fuels, which grow costlier and harder to extract over time.

Featured speakers included:

Ramez Naam – The 100 Trillion Clean Energy Transition

George Papanastasiou, Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry – Cyprus’ Sustainable Energy Strategy

George Pechlivanoglou, General Director, Eunice Energy Group – Energy Autonomy for Households and Businesses in Cyprus

Costas Kadis, EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs – Climate Change in the Mediterranean: Reversing the TrendGeorge

Demosthenous, CEO of VODA.ai – Every Drop Counts. Twice.Christianna Diogenous, CEO, Unicars – Way to Zero: Driving the Future of Sustainable Mobility

Antonia Theodosiou, Cyprus Commissioner for the Environment – Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11): Rethinking Urban Life

Byron Ioannou, Head of Architecture, Frederick University – Planning for Action: Building Climate-Resilient Cypriot Cities

The next Green Agenda Cyprus Summit has already been scheduled for May 20, 2026, continuing the mission to accelerate Cyprus’ ecological transformation.
