Israel’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Oren Anolik, emphasized the growing importance of cooperation between Israel, Cyprus, and Greece, particularly in the field of energy, during the 12th Energy Symposium in Nicosia on Friday. Anolik described the collaboration as key to building a sustainable and interconnected energy future in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Despite the challenges posed by Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas, Anolik highlighted Israel's resilient energy infrastructure and the potential for expanded partnerships with Cyprus. One major initiative being explored is the connection of natural gas pipelines between the two countries, which could help diversify Israel’s gas export markets and contribute to energy security for both nations and Europe.
Anolik also pointed to the successful trilateral partnership between Israel, Cyprus, and Greece, noting the 2021 Memorandum of Understanding on the Great Sea Interconnector project. This initiative aims to link the electricity grids of the three countries, with ongoing discussions to finalize the project’s technical and financial details.
In addition to energy infrastructure, Anolik expressed optimism about increasing cooperation in renewable energy and innovative technologies. He highlighted Israel’s leadership in solar energy, energy storage, and smart grid solutions, which could benefit Cyprus by adopting advanced practices to meet future energy needs.
Looking ahead, the Ambassador stressed the importance of continued collaboration to address global challenges like climate change and the growing demand for energy. He also noted that cooperation could expand beyond energy to include areas like water desalination and climate change mitigation.
