Stefanos Kasselakis, leader of the Movement for Democracy and former president of SYRIZA, is set to appear before the Athens Misdemeanor Court on May 8 to answer allegations of violating Greece’s asset declaration law (commonly referred to as “pothen esches” in Greek).

The preliminary investigation was prompted by the disclosure of documents indicating Kasselakis’ involvement in a US-based company. The company reportedly transferred funds to SYRIZA’s accounts to address financial obligations to party employees.

During the investigation conducted by Athens prosecutor Dimitris Nomikos, Kasselakis was summoned to provide explanations as a suspect. Reports suggest he claimed that he was unaware of the legal prohibition barring political leaders from participating in foreign companies.

Following his testimony, Kasselakis was formally charged with violating asset declaration laws for his involvement in two foreign companies.

Under Greek law, political figures, including party leaders, ministers, members of parliament, and others managing party finances, are prohibited from holding positions or stakes in companies headquartered abroad, either directly or through intermediaries.
