Limassol explores the possibility of a tram system

''It's worth considering at this stage, which is why we want to bring in the example of Marseille and two other French cities,'' says the mayor.

A conference set for March 18 will examine the feasibility of a tram system as a public transport solution that could help ease Limassol’s traffic congestion, Mayor Yiannis Armeftis told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

Speaking during a visit by French Ambassador Clelia Chevrier Kolacko, Armeftis said Limassol is studying the example of Marseille, with which it is twinned.

"It's worth considering at this stage, which is why we want to bring in the example of Marseille and two other French cities," he said, adding that the conference—expected to be attended by the French Ambassador—“will feature experts specializing in the technical and economic aspects of such a project.”

He emphasized that the success of major projects like this depends on their sustainability and the added value they bring to a city. "A tram system can also serve as a catalyst for broader urban redevelopment, as it is closely linked to high-quality public spaces," he noted.

Armeftis stressed that traffic congestion remains a serious problem in Limassol, and as long as 90% of residents rely on private vehicles, the issue will persist, along with its financial and time-related costs.

The conference will take place on March 18 at the Municipal Cultural Center "Panos Solomonides."
