The USS Mount Whitney, flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, arrived in Larnaca this week as part of a planned visit aimed at reinforcing the strong ties between the United States and Cyprus. The ship's presence highlights ongoing efforts to enhance maritime security and promote regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area, the Mount Whitney plays a crucial role in naval diplomacy and works closely with U.S. allies and partners to strengthen integrated maritime power. The vessel is key in supporting a variety of maritime operations and fostering partnerships that bolster national security and international cooperation.
The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia released a statement, noting that the visit to Larnaca is a significant step in the close relationship between the U.S. and the Republic of Cyprus. This cooperation is vital for promoting stability in the region, which is increasingly important due to ongoing geopolitical challenges.
Captain Colin Price, commander of the USS Mount Whitney, emphasized the importance of the visit in a statement, saying it underscores the enduring partnership between the U.S. and Cyprus. "It is an honor to be here in Larnaca as a testament to our commitment to cooperation and our shared vision of maritime security," said Captain Price. "We are proud to be here with our Cypriot partners, working together to ensure stability and security in the Mediterranean."
During the visit, the Mount Whitney will host a reception for high-ranking Cypriot officials, which will be attended by Vice Admiral JT Anderson, commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, and U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie S. Davis. The crew will also engage with local leaders and have the opportunity to explore the island's rich cultural heritage.
The USS Mount Whitney, operating with a combined crew of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Sealift Command personnel, is an integral part of U.S. operations in both Europe and Africa, contributing to broader national security objectives.
The ship’s visit serves as a reminder of the shared commitment to regional cooperation and the U.S. dedication to maintaining a strong presence in the Mediterranean.
