More than €1.5 million in cash seized from Kaili - Panzeri

Eva Kaili will appear before the investigating judge in Brussels on Wednesday

More than €1.5 million in cash was seized from the homes of Eva Kaili and former MEP Pierre Antonio Panzeri in Brussels, according to Belgian police.

According to Le Soir, the federal judicial police discovered approximately 600,000 euros in the former Italian MEP's home.

The remainder of the funds were discovered in the Brussels home of Eva Kaili and her partner Francesco Giorgio, as well as in the possession of the father of the former vice-president of the European Parliament.

"She pleads not guilty"

The Greek MEP declared her innocence in her first reaction after the scandal broke (via her lawyer on Tuesday morning) while she remains in custody. Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, one of her three lawyers, insisted that she has nothing to do with the charges.

"Her position is that she is not guilty. She has nothing to do with Qatari bribery "He told OPEN TV about it. He, on the other hand, claims he has no idea whether or not money was discovered. "There is confidentiality, which I neither confirm nor deny. I have no idea if or how much money was discovered."

"I can only tell you that there is no such child's crib where the money was discovered hidden because I spoke with her sister. I explicitly refute this because her sister, Mrs. Magdalena Kaili, told me the same thing" Mr. Dimitrakopoulos added.

Alexandros Kaili, Eva Kaili's father, stated unequivocally that no restrictions were imposed on him by Belgian authorities and that "he is free if he wants to come to Greece." Furthermore, the lawyer contended that neither the MEP nor her sister or father were involved in any business or commercial activity.

As for the real estate company created by Ms. Kaili and her partner Francesco Giorgio, Mr. Dimitrakopoulos said that it is an IKE (Private company) that has been set up a month ago with a capital of 1,000 euros and has not yet become operational.

At the same time, he said that tomorrow an appeal will be filed against the freezing of the accounts of Eva Kaili and her family by the Anti-Laundering Authority. "These are accounts where salaries are deposited, there is no commercial activity of her family," he reiterated.

On the properties owned by Eva and Magdalena Kaili, he noted that they have been declared in the tax returns and are fully justified.

Finally, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos stated that he has no knowledge of Eva Kaili changing prisons, despite reports that she was transferred from St. Gilles prison.

The decision on her remand in custody will be made tomorrow.

Eva Kaili, on the other hand, will appear before the investigating judge in Brussels at the same time.

The proceedings are expected to be completed by Wednesday afternoon when the court will decide whether she will remain in custody.
