Female driver under influence faces assault charges after highway incident with officer

A woman cited for traffic civil infractions may end up being charged with a lot more offences, after an off duty police officer in Limassol said he avoided a collision with her car that was going the wrong way on the highway.

According to police, a 49-year-old woman was driving the wrong way on the highway in Limassol, Tuesday night around 10:30pm, when she was spotted by an off duty officer who was driving his personal vehicle.

The incident took place near the Polemidia Junction, with the male officer managing to avoid a car collision and the woman, described as a foreign national living in Limassol district, stopping her vehicle and attempting to run away.

According to an official report, the woman was administered a Breathalyzer test, with an official indication of 74μg% which was over three times the legal limit.

Police told Knews the officer did not sustain any injuries but the woman was expected to be charged with assaulting an officer or possibly face common assault charges, in addition to traffic civil infractions such as driving under the influence as well as driving the wrong way.

Polemidia police station and Limassol Traffic police are investigating the incident, which took place during night curfew due to the coronavirus pandemic. No information regarding possible health law violations was immediately available.
