Firefighting efforts are ongoing through the night to control wildfires in northeast Attica, primarily affecting the Mount Penteli and Lake Marathon areas. While the overall situation has improved, with decreased winds and a less active fire front, several hotspots remain a concern.
The most challenging situation is in Nea Makri, where the fire has surged near the Erythros settlement and is approaching Agios Ephraim. Early this morning, Mayor Stergios Tsirkas reported that flames had reached the yards of several homes in Erythros but were quickly contained by firefighters. Authorities issued an evacuation alert for the settlement via the 112 emergency system.
In response to the crisis, international assistance is arriving through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Teams from France, Italy, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Romania are expected to join the firefighting efforts today.
While progress has been made in some areas, including improvements on the New Makri front, firefighters and volunteers remain vigilant for potential reignitions. Mayor Tsirkas has called the situation in Erythros particularly dangerous as the fire continues to threaten residential areas.
