The former Turkish Cypriot negotiator, Osman Ertuğ, criticized the understanding of the Cyprus problem by the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar. Ertuğ's remarks, reported by the Press and Information Office and cited by Kypris, highlighted what he perceived as a lack of comprehension on Quayar's part.

"In the first indications we received from the behaviors displayed by Holguin, it indeed seems that she has not understood the Cyprus issue," Ertuğ stated in an interview with the newspaper.

Ertuğ elaborated on his concerns, citing an example: "For example, she started with a serious mistake by saying 'Cypriot people'. In Cyprus, there are two peoples, not one. 'One people' is an argument of the Greek Cypriot side."

Meanwhile, according to the same newspaper, "foreign minister" Tahsin Ertugrouloglu asserted that Turkey would maintain its presence on the island in the future, in addition to its military presence. He justified this stance by stating, "the island is a Turkish island."

Addressing attendees at a conference on "Cyprus under international law on the 50th anniversary of the happy peace operation of July 20" held at the Black Sea Technical University in Trabzon, Ertugrouloglu emphasized that Cyprus is "a Turkish nation's affair".
