In response to yesterday's decision by the Limassol Criminal Court to sentence an 82-year-old to two and a half years in prison, the President has urged the Attorney General to initiate procedures for his release, as reported by ''K'' sources.
The court ruled the individual's behavior as criminally violent, stating that the use of force, particularly of this magnitude, was unjustifiable. Despite acknowledging a lack of premeditation, the court emphasized the need for caution, especially when the defendant brandished a firearm during the incident.
The Criminal Court dismissed a plea for suspension of the sentence and imposed a two-and-a-half-year prison term for charges related to causing serious bodily harm and an additional one-year sentence for the unlawful possession and use of a firearm.
In June, police arrested the 82-year-old for his alleged involvement in an attempted murder case. According to reports, on June 11 around 7:15 pm, the individual contacted the police, claiming to have caught an unknown man stealing cables from his home in a village in the Limassol district. Allegedly, to intimidate the intruder, he fired a shot into the air with his hunting rifle, causing the unknown man to flee.
Police arrived at the scene and found a 67-year-old man nearby with injuries to his back during the investigation.
