New system will disrupt prison crime networks, says Justice Minister

Newsroom

The Justice Ministry is moving forward with plans to install a new system to disable mobile phones in Central Prisons, despite the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the issue, according to Minister Marios Hartsiotis.

Speaking on state radio, Minister Hartsiotis acknowledged a "flaw" in the current system under the present government's watch and expressed hope that the installation process for the new system would be completed shortly.

Hartsiotis also emphasized that the issue of corruption within the prisons is under scrutiny, with the aim of minimizing it as much as possible.

Regarding prison overcrowding, he mentioned that the problem is expected to be resolved by 2026, with the construction of a new central prison building.
