A summer storm swept across several areas of Cyprus on Sunday, bringing brief but intense rainfall even as a heat warning remained in effect for much of the island.
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology had issued a yellow alert for high temperatures, which is expected to remain in place until 5 p.m. local time. Despite the warning, isolated showers and thunderstorms were reported in multiple regions, offering momentary relief from the oppressive heat.
Temperatures peaked at 40 degrees Celsius in inland areas, while mountain regions saw highs of up to 32°C. The unusual combination of soaring temperatures and sudden rain is not unheard of during the island’s summer months, but it remains relatively rare.
Authorities are urging the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, particularly the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. Drivers are also advised to exercise caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility caused by the rain.
Videos circulating on social media show light rain falling over village streets and in gardens against a cloudy backdrop.
