Sweden has confirmed its first case of mpox, a viral infection that spreads through close contact and is considered a more dangerous variant of the disease. Health and Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed announced the case at a news conference on Thursday, identifying the strain as Clade I, which is associated with more severe symptoms.

“We have now also during the afternoon had confirmation that we have one case in Sweden of the more grave type of mpox, the one called Clade I,” Forssmed said.

The World Health Organization declared mpox a global public health emergency on Wednesday, following a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to other countries. This marks the second time in two years that WHO has issued such a declaration for mpox.
