The 44-year-old taken into custody was believed to be under the influence of narcotics

Newsroom

A 44-year-old man from Syria caused havoc when he entered a bank branch in Nicosia on Friday, putting the police on alert.

According to witnesses, the foreign national entered the bank demanding money, but the bank staff informed him that they couldn't serve him as his account was with a different bank.

In response, the 44-year-old became agitated, causing damage inside the building and reportedly shouting "Allahu Akbar," leading to a commotion in the area. Bank employees promptly called the police.

Members of the "Z" team arrived at the scene and apprehended the man, who, upon a physical search, was found to be carrying neither sharp nor dangerous objects.

A police source stated that the detainee appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. He was subsequently transferred to the Central Police Station in Nicosia for further questioning and examination.
