The EU's accession talks with Turkey are at a standstill

What the Commission's draft says

Source: AMPE

According to the European Commission's draft enlargement report, the EU has a strategic interest in a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as in developing cooperation and a mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey.

However, the Athens News Agency reported that the draft emphasizes the need for Ankara to commit to good neighborly relations and, recalling the conclusions of the March 2021 Summit, the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all member states.

The text also makes note of the ongoing impasse in the accession talks with Turkey. Regression is being discussed with regard to issues like democracy, the rule of law, basic rights, and judicial independence.

Additionally, it is noted that Turkey's democratic institutions continue to function poorly and that fundamental and human rights continue to be violated.
