Torrential downpours cause havoc in some parts of the island

Police were advising motorists to drive carefully

Torrential downpours and heavy rains hit several areas of the island today, causing some havoc in certain areas and on some parts of the highways.

According to the Cyprus Meteorological Service, low pressure and an unstable gas mass affecting the area brought heavy rains to several parts of the island.  A yellow warning has been issued for strong storms from 11:00 on Tuesday (14/6) until 19: 00 in the evening.

Torrential rains in various parts of highways

Tonight the weather will be mostly clear with increasing cloudiness. Low clouds and sparse fog are likely to form mainly on the southeast coast and inland areas during the early morning hours.  Winds will blow northwest to northeast and on the north coast to southeast at 3 Beaufort, while the sea will gradually become calm.  Temperatures will drop to around 18 degrees inland, around 20 on the coast and around 11 in the higher mountains.

Locally increasing clouds tomorrow will give way to partly cloudy skies.  Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected from noon onwards mainly in the mountains and inland. The winds will blow initially southeast to southwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort, eventually changing direction to southwest to northwest.  The south coast will see temporary strong winds up to 5 Beaufort.   Temperatures will rise to around 30 degrees inland, around 28 on the west coast, around 29 on the rest of the coast, and around 22 degrees in the higher mountains.

On Thursday the weather will be mostly clear, however, increasing clouds from noon onwards will give way to isolated showers mainly in the mountains.

On Friday the weather will be mostly clear, however, cloudy weather will prevail from noon onwards. On Saturday the weather will be mostly clear.

Temperatures are expected to gradually increase significantly until Saturday hovering above the average climatic values.
