Trump demands Netanyahu's corruption trial be dropped, calls it a 'witch hunt'

U.S. President defends Israeli leader, urges Israel to cancel or pardon corruption case

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the “immediate” cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial, slamming the case as a “witch hunt” against a man he described as a national hero.

“Such a witch hunt, against a man who gave so much, is unthinkable to me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He deserves much better than this, and so does the State of Israel. Bibi Netanyahu’s trial must be canceled IMMEDIATELY.”

Trump, who returned to the White House earlier this year after winning re-election, added that if the case is not dropped, Netanyahu should be “PARDONED.” He praised the Israeli leader as a “great hero who did so much for the state” of Israel.

Netanyahu, who is standing trial on charges of corruption, fraud and breach of trust, is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face a criminal case while in office. The trial began in 2020 and has been delayed several times, most recently due to Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

Trump drew a direct comparison between Netanyahu’s legal troubles and his own. The U.S. president was recently convicted in a New York court over a hush money payment linked to a porn star—becoming the first American president to be criminally convicted. As he has done before, Trump dismissed the verdict as a politically driven “witch hunt.”

The president also referenced the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran, in which the U.S. joined military action by striking Iranian nuclear sites. Trump claimed he was the one who ultimately imposed a ceasefire between the two countries and declared that Iran’s nuclear weapons program had been completely dismantled—a claim Tehran denies, insisting it never had one.

“Bibi Netanyahu is a WARRIOR,” Trump said, writing the word in all caps. “There may not have been another like him in the history of Israel.”

He went on to claim that Netanyahu worked more harmoniously with him than any other world leader and declared, “It was the United States that saved Israel, and now it will be the United States that will save Bibi Netanyahu.”

Trump ended his post in capital letters: “THIS TRAVESTY OF ‘JUSTICE’ CANNOT BE ALLOWED.”

Netanyahu has rejected all charges against him. His legal team has repeatedly asked for trial delays, citing national security duties and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which erupted after Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel.
