US report warns Europe could ‘lose its identity’

Trump team paints a bleak picture of the continent’s future and signals support for rising nationalist parties.

A new document from the Trump administration paints a stark picture of Europe’s future, warning that immigration and European Union policies could push the continent toward “cultural annihilation” within the next 20 years.

Released Thursday night, the 33-page National Security Strategy highlights economic problems in Europe but suggests they pale compared with what it describes as an existential threat to European culture and identity. The report cites immigration, low birth rates, declining national confidence, censorship, and the influence of supranational organizations as the main culprits.

“The biggest issues facing Europe include activities by the European Union and other supranational bodies that undermine political freedom and sovereignty, immigration policies that are transforming the continent and creating conflict, and a sharp decline in birth rates,” the document says.

The report also signals that the U.S. may support politically aligned European parties, calling the rise of “patriotic” parties a source of optimism. In an introduction, Trump frames the strategy as a “roadmap to ensure that America remains the greatest and most successful nation in human history and the homeland of freedom on earth.”

The strategy has stirred controversy for embracing ideas tied to the so-called “great replacement” theory, which claims that immigration policies could reduce the influence of white Europeans. The document warns that within a few decades, “some NATO members will become majority non-European.”

Europe’s role remains central to U.S. interests, the report notes. It calls for ending the war in Ukraine to restore “strategic stability” with Russia but criticizes what it calls “unstable minority governments” in Europe for obstructing peace efforts. Officials suggest that Washington fears European leaders could “betray” Ukraine in private peace negotiations.

On NATO, the document rejects the idea of perpetual expansion, seeking to “put an end to the perception of NATO as an ever-expanding alliance.”

The report underscores a vision of the U.S. deeply concerned with Europe’s cultural and political trajectory, while reaffirming transatlantic ties amid growing tensions over migration, security, and the war in Ukraine.
