''We're having a heatwave, a tropical heatwave...''

Stay cool with some tried and true methods to beat the heat

Newsroom

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for extreme temperatures today. The warning is in effect from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with maximum temperatures expected to reach a scorching 42 degrees Celsius inland and around 32 degrees Celsius in the higher mountain areas.

Adding to the heatwave, a 'Red Alert' for forest fire risk is also in place. The Forestry Department emphasizes that lighting fires without a permit is strictly prohibited. Violating this rule could result in severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 10 years, fines up to €50,000, or both. For rural fires, penalties can reach up to 5 years in prison or fines up to €20,000, or both.

Barbecues are only allowed in designated picnic areas, and the public is urged to exercise extreme caution during excursions. Avoid any activities that could spark a fire, such as using heat-producing tools or agricultural machinery. If you spot smoke or fire, immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Department).
