Wednesday weather: The 33°C inland peak and the looming Friday shift

Hazy horizons meet a mid-May temperature spike.

Newsroom

The high-pressure system is currently holding the line, but a change in the atmosphere is already waiting in the wings. For now, we are dealing with a thick, pre-summer heat that has pushed the mountains and the coastline into a rare temperature tie.

If you are inland today, the thermometer is the main character. We are looking at a peak temperature of 33°C, so finding some shade is definitely the move. Interestingly, the higher mountains have warmed up significantly, matching the western and northern coasts at a breezy 25°C.

The air carries that familiar May haze as thin dust occasionally drifts through. While the morning starts calm, expect the wind to flex its muscles in the eastern areas later today, kicking up to a strong 5 Beaufort before things settle back down toward sunset.

As the sun dips tonight, the intensity goes with it. The sky remains mostly clear, though some low-level clouds might gather along the shoreline. With light winds and a calm sea, it’s a quiet bridge into tomorrow.

Looking ahead

Wednesday and Thursday: The sunshine remains the dominant feature, though high-altitude clouds will start to filter through more frequently. This is the final stretch of the current heat before the atmosphere begins to reorganize.

Friday: This is when the "weak low" makes its presence felt. The clouds will thicken up, and we might actually see some isolated rain, particularly if you are near the coast. Along with the damp weather, the winds will sharpen up, and temperatures will finally retreat toward the seasonal averages we expect for this time of year.
