A construction worker in Limassol who visited the Emergency Room after injuring himself ended up in handcuffs after suspicions were raised over labor law violations.
Local media said a 48-year-old male described as a foreign national had an accident on the job and went to the ER at Limassol General Hospital to seek medical treatment.
The nature of the accident or injuries was not immediately known but the man was later detained on an arrest warrant following his registration at the hospital.
It was not clear whether police gained access to the hospital’s ER signup sheet but they said the matter came to their attention after the company owner got wind of the mismatch and filed a complaint
According to police, the worker had signed in at the hospital using his personal details that reportedly did not match different information he had shared with the construction company.
The handing over of confidential patient data is governed by strict regulations in the Republic of Cyprus.
It was not clear whether law enforcement authorities gained access to the hospital’s ER signup sheet but police said the patient used his real name, adding that the matter came to their attention after the company owner got wind of the mismatch and filed an official complaint.
“He appears to have gained employment at the company by presenting a Cyprus residence permit and signing an employment document using false personal information,” police said.
The worker was detained on multiple charges including forgery, impersonation, registration under false pretenses, and unauthorized employment.
Knews has been told the individual was from a non-EU country and may have resided lawfully in the Republic of Cyprus, with a police report making no mention of any immigration violation charges.
The man remained in police custody as CID Limassol was investigating the charges.
