The ''shaken, not stirred'' weather report - Thursday edition

The Earth hit snooze, now the sky is throwing hail: Unstable weather conditions mirror the island’s recent jitters.

Newsroom

Good morning! It's Thursday, and while the calendar says we're moving on, the ground and the sky seem to have different ideas. Let's see what fresh chaos nature has in store!

First, let's address the elephant in the room... or perhaps the tectonic plate under the house. You may have noticed the island performing a vigorous shake yesterday, courtesy of a morning quake and an encore performance in the afternoon, complete with those adorable little aftershocks.

The atmosphere is feeling just as jumpy as we are! A weak low-pressure system is lingering, bringing with it unstable weather conditions. In short: the sky is moody and easily triggered.

Today: We’re starting the day with mostly cloudy at times, which is code for "The clouds are hovering, deciding where to dump their contents." Expect local showers and isolated thunderstorms. They're making a splash initially along the coast (beach party!), but the real action moves gradually mainly to the mountains and inland after that.

The forecast is calling for a side of frozen precipitation: Hail is expected in thunderstorms. The sky is literally throwing rocks. Brace yourselves in mountainous and inland areas, the fun may be intense after midday.

Winds start light (3 Beaufort) and variable, but will get a bit testy, becoming southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort). If a thunderstorm hits, those winds may vary and strengthen. They are easily excitable. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. The sea is the most emotionally stable thing around here.

Temperatures are still playing nice: Around 24°C inland, west, and north coasts. Up to 26°C on the south and east coasts (the lucky sun-worshippers). A chilly 16°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight: Tonight, the weather calms down a notch. It will be partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy, with isolated showers and possibly isolated thunderstorms, mainly in coastal areas. Winds are a light, gentle breeze (3 Beaufort), and the sea remains calm to slightly rough.

Friday (tomorrow): More of the same! Mostly cloudy at times, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. And because why not: Hail may occur during a thunderstorm.

Saturday: The storm clouds are starting to pack up. We’ll see locally increased cloud cover, which may produce isolated showers in mountainous areas during the afternoon.

Sunday: Finally, a break! The weather will be mainly clear with locally increased cloud cover. Perfect for shaking off those aftershock jitters.

Temperatures will continue their gentle, steady retreat through Saturday, hovering around or slightly below the average climatic values for the season. But fear not! No significant change in temperature is expected on Sunday. Translation: Dig out your slightly heavier shirts. The sky is calming down, but it's making sure we know who’s boss with a final chilly flourish.

That's the outlook! Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and your umbrella close by.
