A hidden gem in the scenic community of Arodes, the Knights Templar Museum has been captivating visitors since its inauguration last year. Nestled in the Paphos district, the museum shines a spotlight on the legendary order’s intriguing presence in Cyprus, drawing school groups, history buffs, and tourists from near and far.
From History Books to Interactive Exhibits
The museum, made possible by the Erasmus+ program and supported by the Arodes Community Authority, is housed in a former Cooperative building donated by the community. Divided across two floors, it brings history to life with an array of authentic objects from the Templar era.
Visitors to the ground floor are greeted by an impressive display of medieval weaponry, including swords, bows, and spears, while the first floor showcases Templar uniforms, armor, and crowns. The interactive exhibits offer a hands-on glimpse into the lives of the "Poor Knights of the Island," as the Templars were famously known during their time in Cyprus.
An Educational Hub
The museum has become an educational hotspot, thanks to its collaboration with the Erasmus+ program. Irina Kurtinatsia, head of the initiative in Arodes, revealed that the museum regularly hosts groups of 40 students from across Europe, who engage in seminars and activities during their stay in the village. Events held in Arodes Square further enrich the learning experience for these young visitors.
A Historical Stronghold
The Knights Templar established their administrative headquarters in Nicosia but governed surrounding areas, including parts of Paphos and Limassol, from a military base near the Asprokremmos Dam. Historical references also confirm their presence in villages like Finikas, Kalogiannakia, and Arodes, making the museum’s location even more significant.
