A new wildfire has broken out in the Paphos district, specifically in the Pittokopos area, just hours after a blaze in Limassol was brought under control. Two aircraft were dispatched from Limassol to combat the Paphos fire, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Department.
According to the Forestry Department, the fire is raging uncontrollably east of Pittokopos village, prompting the evacuation of a military camp in Inia. Ground forces, including heavy machinery and five aircraft, are actively battling the fire.
Earlier, a wildfire south of Lania, in Limassol district, was brought under control after the "Icarus" firefighting plan was activated. Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis reported on X that the fire had been contained, though small flare-ups within the burned area were being addressed.
Kettis added that around 20 hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and pine trees were scorched. Only one pair of firefighting aircraft remained on-site, while the Civil Defense contributed with six portable firefighting units and 15 personnel.
Earlier efforts involved four fire trucks, two water tankers, and one bulldozer from the Limassol District Administration, as well as volunteer units from Nicosia and Kitas-Weather. The Forestry Department deployed 12 fire trucks and two bulldozers, while six aerial units, including a National Guard helicopter, assisted in coordination under the "Icarus" plan.
