A government study in the Netherlands has found that banning mobile phones and other electronic devices in schools has helped students concentrate better in class.
Of the 317 secondary schools surveyed, about 75% reported improved student concentration since the ban was implemented in January 2024. Nearly two-thirds also said the overall social environment at school had improved, while roughly one-third observed better academic performance among students.
“Fewer distractions, more focus during lessons, and more social interaction, removing phones from classrooms has had a tremendously positive effect,” said Marielle Paul, the deputy minister for primary and secondary education. “It’s very encouraging to see schools making this effort.”
The policy applies to both primary and secondary schools.
