Concerns raised over dangerous sprays and waste management at carnivals

Flammable and carcinogenic agents among substances found in sprays

Newsroom

The use of hazardous sprays at carnival celebrations has come under scrutiny following a recent discussion before the Parliamentary Environment Committee. The committee’s president, Charalambos Theopemptou, expressed shock over reports of sprays containing carcinogenic substances, which pose risks to both public health and the environment. The committee is now considering possible legislative actions to restrict these sprays, while urging local authorities to find ways to eliminate their use.

Theopemptou also raised concerns about the massive amounts of waste generated during carnivals. He suggested that, in line with the European principle of “the polluter pays,” businesses involved in selling carnival products should help fund the cleanup efforts, similar to how paper recycling is financed.

During the discussion, Phanos Panayi from the Limassol municipality revealed that 85 workers had to clean up the city’s streets following the Limassol Carnival, working from late afternoon until early morning to clear the litter.

MPs from both DISY and AKEL parties emphasized the need for improvements in waste management and highlighted the risks posed by the use of carcinogenic sprays, particularly during the Limassol Carnival. They called for immediate action to ensure the safety of participants and the environment, without halting the celebrations.

Tassoula Leontidou, head of the Department of Labor Inspection, confirmed that the sprays are not only flammable but still contain carcinogenic substances, despite changes made by manufacturers in collaboration with importers. Environmental representatives also emphasized the importance of waste separation during collection.

The committee plans to reconvene in three months, with all relevant services present, to continue discussions on addressing these critical issues for public health and environmental protection.
