The confessed killer of the 11-year-old girl in Ilia allegedly admitted that shortly before killing her, he attempted to rape her.
Reports indicate that the perpetrator claimed that the 11-year-old girl rebuked him, stating she would inform her parents.
Subsequently, the perpetrator allegedly used a screwdriver found in the car to kill the 11-year-old girl, which he claims he then disposed of in a swamp.
The perpetrator is expected to appear before the prosecutor and investigating judge in Pyrgos today, facing accusations of attempted rape. Notably, he had previously been convicted of raping a minor.
The 37-year-old suspect was previously charged in 2017 for the rape of a minor, who incidentally was the first cousin of the 11-year-old girl's father.
In 2020, the Zakynthos court sentenced him to 9 years and 8 months in prison. However, he was released under restrictive conditions until the case was heard in the second instance, pending determination by the Court of Appeal.
According to statements by Kostas Kremmidas, the lawyer representing the family of the 11-year-old girl, questions arise as to why the 37-year-old suspect was at large, given his past criminal record.
The incident occurred when, at 9 pm on Sunday night, the 11-year-old left her home in Myrtia, Ilia, intending to visit her grandfather's house. CCTV footage showed her entering the car of her 37-year-old uncle, after which they departed together.
Police reports indicate that the 37-year-old suspect picked up the 11-year-old girl from the Myrtia area and drove her to a rural area between where he allegedly murdered her.
Her disappearance was reported by her father at 3 am on Monday morning. Subsequently, the 37-year-old suspect was arrested and confessed to the crime. He then led police to the location where he indicated he had abandoned the girl's body. He claims to have used a screwdriver in the murder, which has not yet been recovered.
Today, a forensic examination is expected to take place in Patras on the 11-year-old girl's body, aiming to determine the circumstances and time of death. Given the lapse of several hours from her disappearance until the suspect's arrest, determining the exact time of death is crucial.
