Cypriot Gen Z rethinks alcohol: A sobriety shift or economic reality?

As health trends, financial pressures, and shifting social habits reshape nightlife, Cyprus’s Gen Z is drinking less, and differently.

Cyprus's Generation Z is at the heart of a global shift in drinking habits, and local experts suggest the trend is taking root on the island as well. While not completely turning away from alcohol, younger Cypriots are drinking less frequently, opting for lower-alcohol or alcohol-free alternatives, and seeking more intentional, curated social experiences.

According to seasoned bartenders Dinos Constantinides, owner of Nicosia’s Lost & Found Drinkery, and Klelia Aristotelous, manager of Limassol’s Library Bar, Gen Z is approaching nightlife differently than previous generations. Aristotelous notes a clear trend toward lighter drinks, driven by changes in how young people socialize. Constantinides adds that the modern bar experience is less about the drink and more about the ambiance, social setting, and connection.

This evolution aligns with global trends. Studies show Gen Z drinks about a third less beer and wine than older generations, influenced by health awareness, financial limitations, and a growing self-awareness amplified by social media and mental health advocacy.

Both bartenders point to external factors, economic strain and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic as significant drivers of reduced alcohol consumption. While Aristotelous highlights a 10–15% drop in alcohol sales post-pandemic, Constantinides believes the shift is less about a generational dislike of alcohol and more about changing spending habits and lifestyle priorities.

Interestingly, Gen Z isn’t necessarily abstaining. Many are simply choosing when and how to drink more selectively, reserving alcohol for special occasions rather than regular outings. As a result, drinks like gin, tequila-based cocktails, and wine remain popular, but the frequency of consumption has declined.

Beyond personal habits, broader cultural shifts are at play. The “sober curious” movement, encouraging mindful drinking, resonates with Gen Z’s emphasis on wellness, mental health, and self-awareness. With social media spotlighting alcohol alternatives and “dry months,” younger consumers are more informed than ever about the risks of drinking, including links to over 200 diseases.

As socializing continues to evolve, through digital platforms, food culture, and wellness trends, the hospitality industry in Cyprus is beginning to adapt. New venues are embracing these changes, offering more inclusive, alcohol-free options and rethinking the traditional bar experience.

The takeaway? Cyprus’s Gen Z may not be saying goodbye to alcohol altogether, but they’re certainly redefining their relationship with it.
